The short answer: trail crossover or divided commute

Choose the Skule 28 when the lower listed weight, hydration compatibility and removable stabilizing straps matter more than a separate laptop compartment. Choose the Räven 28 when you want the computer in its own compartment, need published laptop-compartment measurements and prefer several dedicated places for small work items. Both are officially listed at 28 liters, but that shared capacity does not make their layouts interchangeable.

This comparison uses the current official US product pages and the exact catalog offers linked below. It is not a comfort test, durability ranking or prediction of how either bag will fit your body. Before ordering, match the color and model name on the Amazon offer to the specifications you intend to rely on.

Skule is lighter, taller and less deep on paper

Fjällräven lists the Skule at 50 × 29 × 18 cm and 750 g. The Räven is listed at 47 × 31 × 21 cm and 1,000 g. That makes the Skule 250 g lighter, 3 cm taller, 2 cm narrower and 3 cm shallower by the published exterior figures. These measurements describe the unloaded bags; they do not reveal usable box-shaped volume or how far a packed pocket will project.

Both pages state 28 liters. Treat that as nominal capacity, not proof that the same load will pack the same way. A water bottle, laptop charger, jacket and rectangular lunch container can interact differently with the two pocket maps. If exterior size is a travel constraint, compare the packed bag—not liters alone—with the current carrier limit.

The laptop route is the clearest practical difference

The Skule places a padded laptop sleeve inside its main compartment and describes it for laptops up to 15 inches. The Räven gives the laptop a separate compartment and publishes maximum laptop dimensions of 43 × 27 cm, also labeled for up to 15 inches. A separate compartment can reduce how much of the main load you disturb at security or at a desk; an internal sleeve keeps the exterior simpler but requires opening the main compartment.

Do not use the shared 15-inch label as a fit guarantee. Measure the complete device, including its case, and compare its width, depth and thickness with the opening and compartment. Fjällräven publishes two dimensions for the Räven compartment but not an allowable thickness on the product page, so thicker devices still need an offer-specific fit check.

Organization favors different routines

The Skule combines its main compartment with a top pocket, a front compartment with organizer pockets, an accessible front zip pocket and stretch side pockets. Its hydration compatibility and elastic cord make sense for a day when water and a removable layer need deliberate places. The official page lists seven pockets, but pocket count alone cannot tell you whether your exact objects fit them.

The Räven divides the load into a separate laptop compartment, a large main compartment, a front organizer with mesh pockets, an inside security pocket and a fleece-lined top pocket. Open side pockets add quick-access storage. This is the more explicitly segmented work-and-study layout, but extra divisions can be wasted space if you mainly carry one bulky item.

Carry features and materials lead to different checks

Both models use padded shoulder straps and an air-mesh back panel. The Skule page additionally lists an adjustable chest strap and a detachable hip belt. Those parts may help stabilize an active load, but the page does not provide a tested comfort limit or torso range. Try the adjustments with the weight you actually plan to carry rather than treating outdoor positioning as a fit result.

The Skule uses 600-denier recycled polyester Oxford fabric and is described as water-repellent. The Räven uses G-1000 HeavyDuty—a blend of recycled polyester and organic cotton—and Fjällräven says its weather resistance can be adapted with Greenland Wax. Neither statement makes either backpack waterproof. The Räven also has a leather handle and its official page identifies non-textile elements of animal origin, which may matter to material-sensitive shoppers.

A practical way to decide

Start with the non-negotiable: choose Räven if a separate computer compartment and published 43 × 27 cm laptop dimensions solve your daily access problem. Start with Skule if a 750 g listed weight, hydration compatibility or removable chest and hip stabilization better matches the job. Then compare the exact models side by side in the comparison tool.

If neither distinction matters, lay out a normal day’s load and assign every item to a pocket before buying. That exercise will expose whether you need the Räven’s divided organizer or the Skule’s outdoor-oriented storage. Missing measurements should stay unknown; a familiar brand name and matching capacity are not substitutes for device, body and packed-size checks.

Related questions

What is the main difference between the Fjallraven Skule 28 and Raven 28?

The Skule 28 is the lighter outdoor crossover, with hydration compatibility and removable chest and hip straps. The Räven 28 is the more divided commuter choice, with a separate laptop compartment, published 43 × 27 cm laptop dimensions and more dedicated organizer pockets.

Is the Fjallraven Skule 28 waterproof?

No waterproof rating is stated on the official product page. Fjällräven describes the Skule 28's 600-denier recycled-polyester Oxford fabric as water-repellent. Protect moisture-sensitive contents separately when conditions may exceed that claim.

Which is lighter, the Skule 28 or Raven 28?
