Plan when expansion would be used
Identify a specific scenario, such as bringing a folded jacket home or adding an overnight kit after class. Check whether expansion opens usable main-compartment space or affects a different area. Inspect the zipper arrangement so you can recognize the correct closure when the bag is full and you are in a hurry.
Compare both configurations
Ask for unexpanded and expanded measurements, then evaluate each against your storage or travel constraints. A compact setting can be useful without making the larger setting suitable for every flight. Try the normal daily load first; occasional flexibility should not come at the expense of an inconvenient everyday carrying shape.
